Last summer, fantasy fans were treated to a veritable feast of genre epics as both HBO's House Of The Dragon and Prime Video's The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power both returned to our screens for triumphant second seasons. But as we wait for the conflicts between House Green and Black — and the precariously allied forces of Middle-earth and the Dark Lord Sauron — to continue, fans of magic, prophecy, politicking, and other such speculative fiction shenanigans aren't being left high and dry by any means. This March will see Amazon's ambitious adaptation of Robert Jordan's sprawling Wheel Of Time continue with the release of the long-anticipated Season 3. And if the first trailer for the latest run of episodes is anything to go by, then it looks like trouble's a-brewing in the Westlands. Check it out below:
After Season 2's explosive finale, which saw Josha Stradowski's Rand al'Thor declared the Dragon Reborn (aka, the poor sod tasked with taking down Wheel Of Time's equivalent of the Devil, The Dark One), this new trailer for the third season shows no sign of the drama slowing any time soon. Quite the opposite in fact. Trollocs, Forsaken, and Black Ajah all crop up in a dazzling glimpse at what Rafe Judkins and co have in store, while the dark visions of fan-favourite Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) — which reveal that neither one of her or Rand can live while the other survives (where have we heard that one before?) — point to a hugely consequential season ahead. After the first season took it's time to get going and the second picked up the pace, this looks like proper top tier stuff, more than worthy of its source material's illustrious name.
And if the dramatic new trailer hasn't fully got you back tangled up in the Web of Destiny, then the new season's official synopsis is sure to do the trick: "The powerful Aes Sedai, Moiraine Damodred (Pike), is tormented by her visions of the future, and Rand al’Thor (Stradowski) struggles to fulfil his destiny as the Dragon Reborn — will he choose the Light or let the Darkness consume him? Season three will take viewers to many new regions and cities across the fictional continent of the Westlands, including the vast deserts of the Aiel Waste, the intoxicating and dangerous port city of Tanchico, and the forbidden and fog-shrouded ancient city of Rhuidean, where Rand and Moiraine will both experience life-changing revelations. Meanwhile on the other side of the world, in Rand’s small hometown of Two Rivers, his lifelong friend Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford) will also embark on a personal journey, one which will change him forever.”
Adapted primarily from The Shadow Rising, the fourth book in Jordan's epic fantasy cycle, The Wheel Of Time Season 3 rolls onto Prime Video UK on 13 March. And yes, we are wheely excited. (Not sorry.)
