Karate Kid: Legends Trailer Unites Multiple Generations With Jackie Chan And Ralph Macchio

The Karate Kid saga has been sweeping the leg for decades now – you have the beloved 1980s originals with Ralph Macchio, the perfectly solid 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith, plus the recent success of streaming series Cobra Kai. Now, Karate Kid: Legends is here, looking to bring together both movie streams. At the heart of the story is a new character, Ben Wang’s Li Fong, who has grown up learning kung fu with Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han, the martial arts master from the 2010 film. But when he moves to the US and faces trouble from bullies, he decides to switch disciplines and enter a karate tournament to solve all his problems. Who better to learn karate from than Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso? Watch the trailer:

Who’s ready to enter the Miyagi-verse? When it comes to Karate Kid movies, a certain level of formula is expected – but that formula is almightily satisfying, if you hit the beats just right. And so, there’s plenty of familiar material here, as Li Fong attempts to learn karate and stand up for himself in a tournament setting. But the switch from kung fu to karate is a smart way of weaving both movie mythologies together, Wang is an intriguing new lead given his role in American Born Chinese, and even after several seasons of his return in Cobra Kai, it’ll be a joy to see Ralph Macchio on the big screen again.

Karate Kid: Legends is the feature debut of British director Jonathan Entwhistle – previously behind several episodes of Netflix series The End Of The F***ing World and I Am Not Okay With This – with a script from Rob Lieber. It’s due in cinemas this summer (30 May in the US, with a UK date yet to be confirmed). Hopefully, it’ll be the best around.
