The Wheel of Time has indeed downplayed Rand's strength in the One Power, but rather than serve as a detriment, this will only make his season 3 story better. In The Wheel of Time books, Rand al'Thor's status as the Dragon Reborn makes him the most dangerous channeler in existence. And while the show's take on Rand is meant to have the same potential, both seasons have held back with his power level in ways that the source material didn't.
