Jeremy Allen White Will Lead Netflix Adaptation Of André Aciman Queer Romance Enigma Variations

It's been eight years since Luca Guadagnino took author André Aciman's queer romance Call Me By Your Name and turned it into one of the most sensual, sweltering, and frankly heartbreaking movies of the 21st century. But while you might've thought a flurry of Aciman adaptations would surely follow, more of the Italian-American writer's work has yet to materialise on screen — until now. Per Variety's reporting, The Bear star Jeremy Allen White is set to star in and produce a series based on Aciman's book Enigma Variations at Netflix.

First published in 2019, Enigma Variations follows the life story of a bisexual man named Paul (White), chronicling his romantic encounters with men and women over the course of a decades spanning journey of self discovery. Presented as a series of vignettes featuring certain recurring characters who drift in and out of Paul's life, Enigma Variations' form is well fitting for the limited series treatment, carrying flavours of both Anna Kendrick starrer Love Life and Netflix's own One Day in its character-focused, prismatic look at love and desire. Helping steer the ship alongside White on this one are The Wheel Of Time alum Amanda Kate Shuman, who is attached to write and showrun the series, and Living director Oliver Hermanus, whose services have been enlisted to get behind the camera and call the shots.

Currently described vaguely as simply "in development", it could be some time before Enigma Variations finds its way to our screens just yet. But with White currently knees deep in filming on Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere and set to make a Huttese appearance in Star Wars spin-off movie The Mandalorian & Grogu next year, The Bear star has plenty of hot projects cooking — and we're looking forward to devouring all of 'em.
