A lot was riding on Captain America: Brave New World this weekend. It’s been six years since Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson was bequeathed the vibranium shield by Steve Rogers in the final reel of Avengers: Endgame – and finally, following the events of streaming series The Falcon And The Winter Soldier – the former sidekick stepped up as the new Captain America in Brave New World. Following something of a year off for Marvel Studios, Julius Onah’s film not only kicks off a big three-movie 2025 for Kevin Feige and co, but marks a grounding back down to Earth after multiple multiverse-centric Marvel outings. And while critical response to the fourth Captain America film was mixed, it’s off to a strong start at the box office.
Brave New World’s opening weekend figures saw it pull in $192 million in ticket sales – $100 million of which came from US audiences, with $92.4 million from around the rest of the world. That’s above early projections, and while no way near Deadpool & Wolverine’s massive $444 million opening, it’s far above the disastrous box office of The Marvels. It also earned more in the US than the opening weekend of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million).
While it’s a promising start for Brave New World, it remains to be seen if the film continues to display wings in the coming weeks. The reported budget of $180 million would mean an overall haul of $400-$500 million is required for it to be a hit, and the audience-metric CinemaScore came in at a ‘B-’, the lowest score an MCU movie has received. Will Sam Wilson continue to fly? Will the star power of Harrison Ford as President Ross / the Red Hulk keep the punters coming in? And what will the rest of the year bring for the MCU? Stay tuned to find out.
