While there is now a release date confirmed for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, the fact that it's still a while off could hurt the franchise.
There's no denying the success of the first movie, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could be seriously affected by its expected release date. The first film was clearly an attempt to begin a movie franchise, and the splash it made at the box office all but guaranteed that a sequel would quickly be confirmed. However, not only did a second movie take much longer than expected to be greenlit, the franchise could suffer because of how long the follow-up will take to arrive.
