The Matrix 5 Coming From Director Drew Goddard, Produced By Lana Wachowski

Ready to see how much farther down the rabbit hole goes? A new chapter of The Matrix franchise is about to start, as the first film not directed by one the Wachowski siblings is now in the works. Currently known as The Matrix 5, the new movie has The Cabin In The Woods' Drew Goddard on board to write and direct this outing.

Lana Wachowski, who directed 2021's The Matrix Resurrections (which brought some new, meta twists to the films' storyline), is on board to executive produce this effort for Warner Bros.

Naturally, plot details are being withheld for now, nor do we know who from the films — including the likes of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss – might be returning, if any. All Warners president of production Jesse Ehrman would tease is that the story will advance the established world without straying too far from what made the series a success (no jokes about "oh, like the sequels did?" please).

"Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters," Ehrman says in a statement. "The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

"It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” Goddard himself says. "Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world."

Given that Resurrections was something of a flop (partly because WB made it available on the Max streaming service day and day in the States), hopes are clearly high for the man who wrote The Martian and brought us Bad Times At The El Royale can return it to succces.
