There's a certain kind of magic to seeing real life siblings sharing the screen. Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko. Chris and Luke Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok. Macaulay and Kieran Culkin in Home Alone (yes, Roman Roy is serial bedwetter Fuller!). And soon to be joining that niche but ever eye-catching canon are Rooney and Kate Mara. Per Deadline's reporting, the sisters — stars of Carol and Black Mirror respectively — are set to lead Bucking Fastard (yes, you read that correctly), the latest movie from mellifluous German auteur Werner Herzog.
Despite their prolific screen careers, Emmy nominee Kate and two-time Oscar nomineee Rooney have never actually shared the screen with one another before. As such, Bucking Fastard — which Herzog is set to direct from a self-penned script — will be a first for the starring siblings, who are set to play twins here. While little has been confirmed regarding the plot for this one, with Deadline only stating that the sisters Mara will play "inseparable twin sisters Joan and Jean" in the true story inspired movie, Herzog's own memoir Every Man For Himself And God Against All provides more info. In a section titled "Unrealised Projects", the Fitzcarraldo filmmaker details hopes to make a film about British identical twins Greta and Freda Chaplin, who infamously became sexually infatuated with their lorry driver next-door neighbour back in the 80s and wound up in court. Of especial interest to Herzog is the fact the twins — who he met several times over the years — spoke synchronously, and the title Bucking Fastard is a nod to a shared faux pas the sisters made while on trial.
Due to start shooting this spring between Ireland and Slovenia, it's likely — but as-yet-unconfirmed — that we'll see Herzog's unrealised project finally realised with our own eyes sometime next year. Until then, we're going to read up more on the Chaplin sisters and have a Herzog-off in the office, repeatedly saying Bucking Fastard until someone has to put a pound in the swear jar. We make our own fun!
