Jack Black Tames Wolves, Fights Zombies And Teams Up With Jason Momoa In A Minecraft Movie Trailer
If The LEGO Movie taught us one thing, it’s that EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!...
If The LEGO Movie taught us one thing, it's that EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! If The LEGO Movie taught us another thing though, it's that brick-based blockbusters in particular can indeed be pretty awesome. And Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess will certainly be hoping that proves to also be true of A Minecraft Movie, his upcoming, Jack Black and Jason Momoa starring live-action take on Mojang's wildly popular sandbox video game. Check out the latest trailer for the movie below:
If the first trailer for the movie gave off some serious Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle vibes, then this latest one leans even further into that hey-guys-we're-in-a-video-game feel, introducing us properly to Jack Black's Steve, who we learn "yearned for the mines" as a child before eventually digging his way to his blocky dreams in man-childhood. If you're a fan of the games, you'll be richly rewarded with glimpses of Redstone contraptions, familiar Minecraft musical stings, and lava-cooked chicken — all lovingly rendered with the geometrical angularity of the game and a Super Mario Bros. Movie style smoothness that really pops off the canvas. If you've never so much as crafted a single pixellated wooden pickaxe however, then the boppy tones of MGMT's 'Time To Pretend', Black and Momoa seemingly challenging each other to an ultimate dude-off, and the sheer visual fantasia of it all promises we're in for something with a little more substance than the cynics amongst us may have been expecting.
And if you still don't know your Ender Pearl from your Creeper, then here's the official synopsis for the film, which co-stars Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy), and Jennifer Coolidge: "Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) — find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world."
We'll find out whether A Minecraft Movie is _ore_some or if it actually winds up being a bit _ghast_ly when Jared Hess' movie hits cinemas on 4 April, 2025.
