Hey! Millennials! Wanna hear something scary? Somehow, it's been 22 whole years since Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan first swapped bodies in Mark Waters' pop-punk driven noughties classic Freaky Friday, a fan-favourite remake of Disney's own 1976 Jodie Foster starrer. Wanna hear something exciting though? Two decades on and JLC and Lohan are back back back for Freakier Friday, a full-on legacy sequel from The High Note and Late Night director Nisha Ganatra. And, as the title (which we called!) suggests, things are about to get a whole lot freakier for Tess and Anna Coleman second time around. Check out the trailer below and you'll see what we mean;
Pink Slip are back! Chad Michael Murray is back! And all the memories of Freaky Friday are coming back to us all at once — along with the sobering realisation that Lindsay Lohan is now just seven years younger than Jamie Lee Curtis was when they made the first movie. But while shots of the two veritable charisma cannons firing off together once more promises our heartstrings will be getting pulled with this years in the making reunion (after all, what is a legacy sequel without a little slice of existentialism?), this follow-up's new wrinkle — that we're getting a four-way body swap that incorporates a now middle-aged Anna's kids — promises family-friendly hijinks aplenty. And... a dancing Manny Jacinto? Yes please!
The official synopsis for the long-gestating sequel reads as follows: "The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna Coleman (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice."
Will Anna and Jake finally get together? Will this be the gig that breaks Lindsay Lohan out of Netflix Christmas movie jail? And will lightning strike twice (well, technically thrice) for this latest round of body-swap shenanigans? We'll find out the answers to at least a couple of those questions when Freakier Friday lands in cinemas on 8 August. (Also, in case Disney are reading and want threequel title ideas, we've got Threeky Friday, Fr3aky Friday, and Freakiest Friday up for grabs. Our rates are reasonable and we do take payment in Pink Slip tour tickets. Take me away, away, away, away, away...)
