Three years after Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan was iced (quite literally) at the end of Dexter: New Blood, the Bay Harbor Butcher is back back back baby — with a fresh face and a familiar inner voice. That's right, folks, Dexter: Original Sin (aka Young Dexter) is headed for Paramount+ on Friday 13 December, and the streamer has just dropped our first proper look at Patrick Gibson in the role of a student era Dexter as the soon-to-be-serial-killer picks up the tricks of the blood spilling trade and establishes his Code. With Michael C. Hall providing ice-cold inner monologues, Christian Slater as the inspired pick to play Dexter's father/mentor in murder Harry, and a special guest appearance from one Sarah Michelle Gellar, it's a doozy! Check out the trailer below:
"This hunger that you have inside of you, it needs a master," intones Christian Slater's Harry at the start of this fresh teaser for Original Sin — and as Michael C. Hall's incarnation of Dexter lies on a gurney in the present Dexter timeline, Patrick Gibson's fresh-faced sociopath looks to control that hunger in the past as he begins an internship at Miami Metro PD. Cue synth beats, gruesome crime scenes, an insouciant Gibson giving great low-key menacing vibes as Hall brings his dark passenger to life, and actual Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, uttering the already iconic line, "Spatter matters." For fans of the OG show, we also get Christina Milian as a young Detective LaGuera and James Martinez assuming the role of a spry looking Angel Batista, as well as another new addition to the franchise's impressive ensemble in the form of Patrick Dempsey, whose silver fox hair and thick tache combo already have us deeply invested in what this show has to offer.
Here's the official synopsis for the series: "Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department."
With several Dexter spin-offs in the works, this new prequel show looking to have struck a solid balance between nostalgic throwbacks to the OG series and fresh ideas to chronicle the making of a murderer, and the trailer toying with the notion that Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan may not be quite so dead as he seemed when we last saw him (c'mon, the man's heading to hospital with a pulse, and a show called Dexter: Resurrection is coming...), there's never been a better time to join Dexter and his dark passenger on their travels. Roll on Friday 13th and the beginning of Dexter: Original Sin.
