The Naked Gun Trailer: Liam Neeson Has A Very Particular Set Of Skills (And A Skirt) In Comedy Reboot

Liam Neeson is an actor with a very particular set of skills. In the last decade and a half, that has primarily been looking gruff, talking smack, and kicking ass in a slew of geriaction films, from the Taken franchise to The Grey to The Commuter and, most recently, In The Land Of Saints And Sinners. But in The Lonely Island alum Akiva Schaffer's long-gestating, finally-nearly-here reboot of The Naked Gun, Neeson is set to show off a new skill only previously hinted at in guest spots on the likes of Extras and Derry Girls — comedy. And if the first trailer for the movie is anything to go by, then the only thing Neeson's Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. is going to be killing here is us... because we might just die laughing. Check it out below;

Okay, hands up: who had 'Liam Neeson shivving baddies with a sharpened lollipop stick while dressed as a schoolgirl' on their 2025 bingo card? Us neither, but hey — it sure is funny! In this short but sweet (and ever so slightly surreal) first look at Poster: Never Stop Never Stopping director Schaffer's latest lollapalooza, Neeson leans into the absurd — and the action — as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., son of Police Squad's former finest Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), showing off his tighty whiteys and offering a knowing look to camera when he says he's from "Police Squad... the new version." Beyond that, we see Drebin Jr. paying tribute to his dear old daddy, as well as Paul Walter Hauser's Capt. Ed Hocken doing the same for his (no prizes for guessing who that might be), and, well, the whole new-look-but-same-named PD following suit — including an edgy albeit hilarious nod to O.J. Simpson's Nordberg from the original ZAZ movies. It's not a lot to go on, admittedly, but the tone already feels bang on the money — a winning mix of The Lonely Island's brand of 21st century absurdism (see also; Hot Rod, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the last two decades of SNL) and good old-fashioned ZAZ parody silliness.

Not seen in this trailer but confirmed to star alongside Neeson and Walter Hauser are Pamela Anderson, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, WWE superstar Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. We'll find out whether we're in for a Goodyear with Schaeffer, co-conspirators Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, and their starry cast's ballsy reboot when we cop a load of The Naked Gun — in cinemas soon.
