At the end of The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader captured Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca with the help of Lando Calrissian, who had betrayed his friend. Darth Vader then placed Han in carbonite, leaving him frozen in limbo. Ultimately, Vader gifted the block of carbonite containing Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt, to whom Han owed quite a bit of money.
