A Surprising Pokémon is Responsible for Ash's First Rival's Growth
Gary’s first major loss helped his character grow.
Pokémon fans are quite familiar with Ash's rival, Gary, and his obnoxious attitude towards Ash, and basically everyone else. While Gary did grow as a character, with him setting aside his rivalry with Ash after a climactic battle at the Silver Conference, there was actually an even earlier turning point in their relationship, and that happened when Gary challenged the Viridian City gym.
