What Is Hard Sci-Fi?
Science fiction is a broad genre, but what exactly is hard sci-fi and how does that connect to some of the movies and TV shows we've seen recently?
What defines the sub-genre known as "hard" science fiction? It's a term that might be useful to understand with the recent release of Netflix's 3 Body Problem. The series is based on the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy of novels by Liu Cixin, whose work has been described as not merely hard sci-fi, but "at the diamond end" of the hardness scale. So, what makes Liu's work such a clear example of this genre? It's not that easy to say. Hard sci-fi is easy to define, but only as long as you stay pretty broad in your definition. Broadly, entries in this genre are understood to emphasize explaining the science behind their fictional worlds.
