While Grey's Anatomy is fictional, the writers, for the most part, do consult medical professionals and try to stick to realistic procedures, surgeries, and medical problems. Some patients within the series land themselves in wild and crazy situations — like having an active bomb in one's abdomen or being trapped and confined in a car that gets towed to the hospital parking lot — but there are many more issues that arise that realistically hit home for fans.
