Martin Scorsese To Direct Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson And Emily Blunt In Hawaiian Crime Movie

At the ripe old age of 82, Martin Scorsese could be forgiven for slowing things down a little, for taking some time out to watch Captain America: Brave New World or binge a bit of Daredevil: Born Again perhaps. But vacation is evidently not a word in the octogenarian auteur's vocabulary, as just weeks after we learned that Scorsese's set to reteam with his Killers Of The Flower Moon lead Leonardo DiCaprio on The Devil In The White City, the octogenarian auteur is already lining up another tantalising new project. According to Deadline, Leo and Marty are shopping a Hawaii set crime drama around Hollywood, with DiCaprio set to star alongside another dynamic filmmaking duo, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Per Deadline's reporting, the film — mouthwateringly pitched as a sort of Hawaiian Goodfellas-cum-The Departed — charts the hitherto untold true story of a merciless crime boss as he battles for control of Hawaii's criminal underworld against rival syndicates and corporations throughout the sixties and seventies. Described as "the last great American mob saga", telling as it does a tale of not just a turf war but also a battle for an entire culture's survival, the as-yet-untitled film sounds like it would line up well alongside Scorsese's most recent movies, which have seen Marty adopt an increasingly reflective filmmaking mode as he reckons with America's history of violence — and that violence's cost. As for who DiCaprio, Johnson, and Blunt will be playing, nothing has been confirmed as of yet, though Johnson's Polynesian heritage would make him the most likely candidate to be playing a man who sounds like a Hawaiian Jimmy the Gent.

Initially pitched to Scorsese and DiCaprio by Blunt and Johnson, who will next be seen on screen together in Benny Safdie's upcoming MMA biopic The Smashing Machine, this one is still in the pitching phase, so anything — or indeed nothing — could happen at this stage. But with such huge names on board, a properly fascinating story to tell, and word on the street that Tinsel Town's big wigs are already getting their bids in sharpish, we have everything crossed that we'll be hearing much more about 'Hawaiian Goodfellas' in the near future. It's certainly a tasty prospect!
