It's been less than two years since Jesse Armstrong brought the Roy family saga to an end with Succession Season 4, sealing his series' place among the greatest TV shows of all time in the process. But if you thought the prolific writer might be inclined to rest on his laurels and take a bit of a break after dominating last year's Emmy awards, then you're sorely mistaken. Just two months after Deadline exclusively revealed that Armstrong is gearing up to make his directorial debut with an original HBO movie, today it's been confirmed (via a snow-strewn Instagram post) that said film is heading our way this spring — with Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef set to star.
Written by Armstrong himself, precious little is known at this point about what exactly the filmmaker's debut behind the camera will entail, but the rough description shared by Deadline suggest we could be in for another potentially lacerating tale of fraying relationships amid financial tumult. According to the trade, the movie follows four friends (that'll be Carell, Schwartzman, Smith, and Youssef) who meet up against the backdrop of an international economic crisis.
In a statement accompanying the cast reveal, HBO's Head of Drama Series and Films Francesca Orsi described Armstrong's latest project as "timely", and as "a bold examination of modern greed, power and male ambition." The director also shared his own excitement for the project in another statement, adding, “I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on Succession has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so. I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”
With cameras set to roll in Park City, Utah later this month, whatever Armstrong is cooking up will be coming at us piping hot to make that incredibly tight spring release window. We'll find out whether the Succession successor — announced and made in such rapid succession — is a success very soon. Probably just in time for us to have finished untying our tongues from trying to say that last sentence out loud... blimey!
