As we head towards 2025, we’re getting closer and closer to the dawn of James Gunn’s all-new DCU. The Suicide Squad filmmaker and producer Peter Safran are at the helm of the re-jigged DC Studios, going big with next summer’s Gunn-directed Superman, but technically launching this December with animated series Creature Commandos. And now, Gunn has announced another animated project for the DCU slate – this one a big-screen release, titled Dynamic Duo. Make way for the story of Robin.
Or, as Gunn himself put it on social media, ‘Robins’. Because as its title suggests, there’ll be a pair of characters at play here – the film will focus on both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, who have each taken the Robin mantle under Batman at various points of continuity. Grayson was the original Robin, and later went on to assume the name Nightwing; Todd was the second Robin, and later popped up in more villainous form as Red Hood. “Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, Dynamic Duo, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd,” Gunn wrote.
Notably, Gunn also expanded on the animation style for the film – which sounds like it won’t be the usual studio fare. The filmmaker named Swaybox as the team behind the production – a New Orleans-based creative team who work primarily in puppetry. As a result, Dynamic Duo will be “a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI,” Gunn says. The DC Studios boss also confirmed Coco and Lightyear writer Matt Aldrich as the man behind the script, while Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho is also on producing duties. Don’t take that as a sign, though, that it’s in any way related to The Batman universe – which sits separately to the DCU.
Elsewhere, the DCU slate is gradually coming together – Superman will be followed by Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow in 2026, HBO series Lanterns is gearing up to shoot in 2025, and next year should also see the release of Peacemaker Season 2. Here’s hoping the dynamic duo of Gunn and Safran can pull it all off.
