Foundation Scores Season 4 Renewal At Apple TV+ Ahead Of Season 3 Finale

In recent years, Apple TV+ has asserted its status as the home of hard sci-fi as the likes of For All Mankind, Silo, Dark Matter, and Constellation have all come along to dazzle — and indeed frazzle — our puny mortal minds. And of the streamer's stacked speculative fiction slate, no series has proved more dazzling (or frazzling) than Foundation, David S. Goyer's byzantine, bizarre, quite singularly brilliant adaptation of legendary novelist Isaac Asimov's eponymous millennia-spanning saga. Clearly Apple's top brass agree, as Deadline have confirmed that the Jared Harris and Lee Pace starring show has just scored a Season 4 renewal ahead of its upcoming Season 3 finale.

Per Deadline's reporting, a renewal for the series — which, in broad terms, offers a more character-driven take on Asimov's tale of a collapsing galactic empire and the mathematicians frantically trying to save humanity across oceans of time — has been in the works for a while now. Following series co-creator and OG showrunner David S. Goyer's dramatic departure from the show amid Season 3's tumultuous production, Apple moved to install Fear The Walking Dead's Ian Goldberg as the series' new co-showrunner — serving alongside David Kob — earlier this year, assembling a Season 4 writers' room at the same time.

“There is no series quite like Foundation and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four,” said new showrunners Goldberg and Kob in a joint statement accompanying their show's renewal. “We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional, storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business.”

With Empire's own James Dyer hailing Foundation Season 3 as the season that cements the series' status as "the jewel in [Apple TV+'s] four-dimensional crown," telepathic agent of chaos the Mule (Pilou Asbæk) seemingly on the precipice of taking over the galaxy ahead of the latest season's finale, and a fresh creative team ready to enter the fray for Season 4, Apple's unsung epic looks to have set a solid, er, Foundation for a prosperous future.
