Daniel Day-Lewis Will Return To Acting In His Son Ronan’s Film Anemone

An actor coming out of retirement for one last movie? Now that’ll be the day. A world class, three-time Oscar winning actor coming out of retirement for one last movie, though? Well that'll be the Day-Lewis. Daniel Day-Lewis, to be precise. Yes, you read that right folks — the My Left Foot, Lincoln, and There Will Be Blood star is officially getting ready to make his first film appearance since 2017’s Phantom Thread. Per Variety's reporting, the actor — who formally announced he was hanging up his acting boots seven years ago — will be playing the lead in his son Ronan Day-Lewis’ feature directorial debut, Anemone.

Co-written by the father-son Day-Lewis duo, Anemone's plot specifics are currently being kept under wraps, but the film has been described as an exploration of "the dynamics of familial bonds", with fathers, sons, and brothers' relationships all set to be placed under the microscope in the movie. And the Last Of The Mohicans actor won't be short of talent supporting him on-screen in the telling of this tale either, as British stalwarts Sean Bean and Samantha Morton — and English up-and-comers Samuel Bottomley (Tyrannosaur) and Safia Oakley-Green (Sherwood) — have all also been confirmed to be among the film's ensemble.

“We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski in a statement accompanying Anemone's announcement. “They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”

And as if the return of Daniel Day-Lewis to the cinematic canvas isn't an exciting enough prospect as it is, his son has brought together a hell of a team behind the camera too for this one. The Zone Of Interest's Chris Oddy is handling production design on Anemone, The Crown costumer Jane Petrie will be serving up sure-to-be Reynolds Woodcock worthy looks, and Love Lies Bleeding DP Ben Fordesman will be shooting the whole thing. With so much talent behind Ronan Day-Lewis' first film, could his father be in the race already for a fourth Oscar win? We certainly wouldn't bet against it. After all, he is who the Lord has chosen!
