Craig Gillespie Reportedly In Talks To Direct Supergirl For DC Studios

The roster of directors aboard the DC universe projects being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran is growing. According to Deadline, I, Tonya/Cruella director Craig Gillespie is now nailing down the finer points of a deal to direct Supergirl.

While it has yet to be officially confirmed – these days, that often tends to be via James Gunn on social media, and at time of writing he hasn't mentioned it – Gillespie is surely a good shout to handle the movie, which will star House Of The Dragon's Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin. We're promised a harder-edged Kara than in the recent TV series; this take on the character was raised on a barren rock chipped from the destroyed Krypton, who sees everyone around her die before reaching Earth.

This new film is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, with Ana Nogueira providing the script adaptation.

Though it's disappointing that this represents a missed opportunity to hire a female director for a female-focused story, Gillespie does at least have experience handing films where women are front and centre.

If he does end up signing on, he'll join the likes of Gunn (who is making Superman now ahead of an 11 July, 2025 release date) and Andy Muschietti (on board Batman tale The Brave And The Bold) in the ranks of directors handling DC Studios' cinematic output.
