Aimee Lou Wood is having quite the moment right about now. Having burst onto our screens back in 2019 as budding baker Aimee Gibbs in Netflix’s Sex Education, the Mancunian’s star has been on the rise ever since. And now, hot on the heels of a top billed trip to The White Lotus with Walton Goggins for Season 3 of Mike White's bougie satire, Wood is getting ready to release Film Club, an original half-hour BBC romantic comedy series co-starring, co-written, and co-created by herself alongside House Of The Dragon and Big Boys star Ralph Davis.
In the show, set to air on the BBC later this year, Wood and Nabhaan Rizwan (KAOS, In Camera) play Evie and Noa, inseparable besties who run a weekly film club from out of Evie's mum's garage (and may or may not have more than friendship on their minds.) Now, we here at Empire like to think of ourselves as a film club of sorts, with you dear readers all cherished members of our ever-growing gang of screen-loving movie and TV buffs. And so, in recognition of the beautiful bond our shared love of screens both big and small has fostered, we've had a word with the Beeb and procured an exciting, exclusive set of photos offering a first look at Evie, Noa, and their precious Film Club. Check them out below:

Bulb light. Longing looks. DIY sci-fi set dressing complete with copious amounts of tin foil and what appears to be a spot of Ellen Ripley cosplay. Mother of mothers Suranne Jones in full tiger mum mode. Yeah, we're thinking Wood and Davis are on to something here. And if you still need any more convincing, then the BBC's official synopsis of the show should clinch it: "It’s Friday night. 7pm. Film Club Week 198. Evie (Wood) hasn’t left the house in six months after a ‘wobble’, and tonight, things are different. Noa’s (Rizwan) got big news. A dream job is taking him across the other side of the country, which means that all of this is ending. That reality is hitting. That they’re going to be forced to consider for the first time they might be more than just friends. Neither of them are the best when it comes to emotions but this time those emotions might be impossible to ignore. And as if life weren’t challenging enough already, Evie is going to be navigating this amongst the eccentricity of her family home — living with her fiercely loving single mum Suz (Suranne Jones), sister Izzie (Liv Hall), and handsome boyfriend/sometime man of the house Josh (Adam Long)."
Made by Gaumont, the French production company behind the likes of Lupin, Locked In, and Narcos, Film Club is set to drop on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer later in 2025. Count us in!
