In American Fiction, Jeffrey Wright plays a character named Thelonious Ellison, a writer who spends the entire film going by the nickname "Monk" for a key reason. The film, which was among the winners at the 2024 Oscars, is based on the 2001 novel, Erasure, by Percival Everett. It tells the story of a Black author who tries to make a point by writing a stereotypical "Black" book under the pseudonym "Stagg R. Leigh," only for the work to be taken seriously by white critics and readers.
