Ever since it was announced that Disney was going back to The Grid for more Tron, fans have been asking the question: who’s going to be on soundtrack duties? One of the most memorable elements of 2010’s Tron: Legacy was its superlative score courtesy of French disco legends Daft Punk – but since the duo disbanded a few years ago, it was always a slim chance that they’d return for Joachim Rønning’s upcoming Tron: Ares. But now we have an official answer as to who's lined up, and it’s a particularly exciting one.
As confirmed at Disney’s D23 Expo, the Ares soundtrack will be coming from none other than Nine Inch Nails – the industrial icons known for blending rock with ear-rattling electronic production. So, perfect for a Tron film, then.
Not only does Nine Inch Nails’ work feel like a strong fit for Tron – and especially Ares’ apocalyptic notion of Jared Leto’s synthesised title character leaving virtual reality behind and attempting to take over our world – but the band’s Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been creating Hollywood soundtracks for a while now, often to stellar effect. We’ll have to wait until October 2025 to hear exactly what they cook up for this one. But in the meantime, we’re off to sync up the Challengers score to a lightcycle race for a homemade sneak preview.
