For months now, rumours have been doing the rounds that Apple TV+ gem Ted Lasso's third and final season may not have been quite so final after all. And while the prospect of seeing Jason Sudeikis' moustachioed football coach back in the dugout at AFC Richmond was certainly a tantalising one, we decided not to report on said rumours until an official announcement was made on the show's future. Well folks, after weeks of hoping, it's time to believe — Apple has today announced that Ted Lasso Season 4 is officially happening! And what's more, Sudeikis will be back both behind and in front of the camera as star and executive producer.
“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap,” said Sudeikis in a statement accompanying the announcement of the Emmy winning show's return. “In season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.” Sudeikis' quote serves as a typically Lassoian — and no doubt intentionally cryptic — logline for the series ahead, which could kick off in any number of ways. As fans will recall, Season 3 ended with *SPOILER ALERT* Ted heading home to Kansas to coach his son Henry's junior football team, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) stepping up as Richmond's new head coach with Nate the Great Again (Nick Mohammed) at his side, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) rekindling her romance with her Dutch meet-cute, and Keeley (Juno Temple) snubbing both Roy and Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) in favour of exploring the idea of starting an AFC Richmond Women's team.
Which, if any, of those threads will be picked up in Season 4 remains to be seen at this point — as does who will be returning alongside Sudeikis when Ted Lasso comes back to our screens. For now, we at least know Brett Goldstein and Brendan Hunt — aka Coach Beard — will be on the writing team for the new series, and we're cautiously optimistic that in the days and weeks ahead we'll see more of the team signing new contracts for the upcoming season (Deadline already have sources reporting Goldstein, Waddingham, and Jeremy Swift are in line to appear, with Temple in negotiations, too.) But until we hear more about what Sudeikis and co are cooking up, we leave fans and sceptics alike with two parting thoughts, taken from the great man himself (and also Dani Rojas). Firstly, be curious, not judgmental. And secondly, FOOTBALL IS LIFE!
