Task Trailer: Mark Ruffalo Is A Troubled FBI Agent In Mare Of Easttown Creator’s New Crime Drama

When a new Spider-Man movie needs a Hulk, that's a task for Mark Ruffalo. When a new crime drama from Brad Ingelsby needs someone to play a grizzled FBI agent dealing with trauma and violent felons however, well then that's a Task for Mark Ruffalo. In Mare Of Easttown creator Ingelsby's upcoming seven-episode Sky limited series, Ruffalo plays Tom, an officer heading up a Task Force to investigate a series of violent robberies in the suburbs of Philadelphia. So what's the rub, then? Well, it turns out the crook he's chasing, the unfortunately named Robbie (Tom Pelphry), is actually just an in-too-deep family man who Tom has more than a little in common with. Check out the trailer for the cat-and-mouse series below;

Jean Valjean and Javert eat your hearts out — it would appear Philadelphian Les Miserables is here. As this first trailer, brilliantly set to Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', tees up, we've got the ethically compromised lawman wrestling with the meaning of mercy and forgiveness; we've got the penitent thief, driven to desperate measures to provide for his family, paying the price every day as his righteous daughter (here less Cosette, more a slightly emo Emilia Jones) holds his feet to the flames; and we've got the spectre of the dead mother (two of 'em in this one) hanging over proceedings, just to further charge the emotional powder keg before it blows. And, as a nice little bonus, this one comes with added violent biker dudes and high-stakes shootouts. Victor Hugo could never!

In all seriousness though, following Ruffalo's recent year forays into the world of TV with All The Light We Cannot See, I Know This Much Is True, and Hal & Harper, this looks to be another brilliant deployment of the four-time Oscar nominee's ability to bring both tenacity and tenderness to men carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders — and, in the form of Pelphrey, Ingelsby seems to have found a perfect foil for him. In all fairness, a quick glance at the ensemble (Martha Plimpton! Owen Teague! Fabien Frankel!) shows no loose links in the series' impressive line-up either. We'll see how things shake out for Tom and Robbie when Task premieres on Sky on 8 September. *Alexa, play 'The Confrontation' from Les Miserables*
