Big news for all the Satoshi Kon fans out there – the legendary anime director’s mind-bending thriller Perfect Blue is coming back to the big screen in the very near future. If you haven’t seen Perfect Blue? This is your chance to watch one of the most influential films of recent decades in all its glory. And if you have seen Perfect Blue, chances are you’ll be hopping on the opportunity to see it projected large and loud.
Kon’s film is confirmed to hit UK cinemas this October in 4K, courtesy of Anime Ltd. Originally released in 1998, Perfect Blue is a proper grown-up thriller, following pop star Mima as she hopes to leave her girl-group life behind and instead pursue an acting career. But obsessive fans, attempts at an edgy reinvention, and the pressures of celebrity leave her psyche fraying at the seams – creating a world where you’re never quite sure what is or isn’t real. The impact of Kon’s film can be felt in everything from Black Swan, to Memento, to Vox Lux and MaXXXine, even KPop Demon Hunters, well ahead of its time in portraying the dark side of stan culture, the faceless pressure of online fandom, and a media landscape that preys on young stars.
Whether you’re revisiting this classic, or seeing it afresh, you’ll find Perfect Blue in cinemas – both in Japanese with English subtitles, and an English dubbed version – from 10 October, with a 4K Ultra-HD home release to follow. Cue the music.
