Matthew Lillard Will Return As Stu Macher In Scream 7

It's a truth universally acknowledged that if you don't physically see a character die on screen, then they simply are not dead. Hell, sometimes you do see them die and they still come back. But in the case of Matthew Lillard's Scream fan favourite Stu Macher, the OG Ghostface killer seemed pretty damn dead when last we saw him, having just had a live 50-pound CRT TV dropped on his head after trading cuts with fellow stab-happy psycho Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). But as the mad man himself once said, "These days you've gotta have a sequel!" And so, per Deadline's reporting (and Matthew Lillard's Instagram), Stuart 'Stu' Macher will be back in Kevin Williamson's upcoming Scream VII.

News of Lillard's role reprisal comes hot on the heels of this evening's other eye-catching Scream 7 casting announcement, which is the return of another long presumed dead Ghostface to the franchise — Scott Foley's Scream 3 wrong'un (and Sidney Prescott's half-brother) Roman Bridger. How Lillard and Foley are back, like pretty much everything about Kevin Williamson's movie at this stage, is a mystery. For all we know, they could be ghosts, or they could be Stu and Roman's twin brothers (yes, we haven't forgotten those rumours from back in the day about Stu's twin). But however they factor into Williamson and writer Guy Busick's plans, they'll have no shortage of esteemed company. Already confirmed to be returning for the slasher saga's seventh instalment are Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown; and they're joined by newcomers McKenna Grace, Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, and Mark Consuelos.

So just how exactly is Stu back after all these years? And what's the deal with multiple past Ghostfaces showing up? Also, while we're at it, what's the deal with Sid's new husband Mark Evans (McHale) and what happened to Patrick Dempsey's obviously superior Mark Kincaid? Even after consulting our trusty Scream recap, our noodles are still twisted. But with production already well underway on Scream VII ahead of the movie's planned 27 February, 2026 theatrical release, we won't have to wait too long for answers. But for now, the upshot is Stu Macher is alive, and Sidney Prescott is in danger. And to that we have just two words to add: Liver alone!
