It is a truth universally acknowledged (or at least should be) that Matthew Lillard is one of the most endlessly fascinating — and, if we're being honest, underrated — character actors of his generation. From Scream's Stu Macher, to SLC Punk!'s Stevo, to Scooby-Doo's Shaggy Rogers and Twin Peaks' William Hastings and Five Nights At Freddy's Steve Raglan/William Afton, the man constantly delivers. And now, ahead of starring in Mike Flanagan's upcoming The Life Of Chuck and reprising the role of Stu in next year's Scream VII, Lillard is already lining up another eye-catching role — as the latest addition to the ever-expanding MCU.
Per Deadline's reporting, Lillard has just signed on to star in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, which sources have confirmed is set to enter production next week. Who exactly Lillard will play in the series, a revival of Netflix's wildly popular mid-2010s take on Matt Murdock's Man With No Fear, remains shrouded in secrecy at this stage. And given Lillard's capacity for playing roles all across the spectrum of morality — and Marvel's famously strong willed approach to avoiding anything even remotely spoilerific — whether he'll be in league with Charlie Cox's 'Devil, cosying up to Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin, or doing his own thing entirely is anyone's guess.
Still, regardless of the scarcity of further info surrounding Lillard's casting, this eye-catching piece of casting news only serves to increase our already uncontrollable excitement for the return of Matt Murdock, Foggy (Elden Henson), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) et al. next week. Yeah, that's right folks: seven long years after Daredevil's Season 3 finale, we're now mere days away from heading back to Hell's Kitchen. We'll be seeing Daredevil born again in Daredevil: Born Again when it makes its debut on Disney+ on 4 March — and now we know we'll be seeing Matthew Lillard take his first steps into the Marvel Cinematic Universe pretty soon after. Zoinks!
