As the old Kop chant goes, "We'll be coming, we'll be coming, we'll be coming down the road, when you hear the noise of the Bill Shankly boys we'll be coming down the road!" And soon we won't just be hearing the noise of the Bill Shankly boys, folks — we'll be seeing them, and the legendary Liverpool FC manager, on our screens. As announced on the LFC website earlier today, the Premier League leaders are teaming up with A24 and screenwriter Jack Thorne (This Is England '86, '88, '90) to tell the story of Shankly's reign, which took Liverpool from the pits of the English Second Division to three league titles, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Cup while shaping the club into the team over 400 million fans support today.
Set to be produced in association with Box To Box, the studio behind Netflix phenomenon Drive To Survive, the A24 x LFC collaboration is set to not only explore the culture at the club that Shankly fostered on the pitch and in the boot room, but also the culture of the city of Liverpool as it stood in the 1960s — a hub of music and art, the birthplace of The Beatles, Cilla Black, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and the Merseybeat. The club's description of the show as a "multi-episode drama", and the appointment of Jack Thorne to write it, suggest we'll be in for a years-spanning portrait of the evolution of a specific time, place, and its people, This Is England style — though at this point the specifics of the series have yet to be pinned down.
"I think it's a wonderful way to share the story of my grandad's time at LFC," said Karen Gill, Bill Shankly's granddaughter, in a statement. "Anybody who knows anything about the club knows what it meant to Bill Shankly. This is going to be a must-watch for all Liverpool fans and it's a privilege to have the chance now to showcase his story to the wider world. I'm looking forward to seeing how this project unfolds and being a part of it."
For screenwriter Thorne, the show represents an opportunity to honour the man that was Bill Shankly, the club that he built, and the city that made it all possible. "I'm excited to be telling this incredible story and it's an honour to be working alongside A24 and Liverpool Football Club. "Our goal is to focus not just on the club, but on the city itself - because, and this is one thing Shankly made sure, the club belongs to the city and the city belongs to the club," said Thorne in his own statement. "We have a chance with this show to celebrate both a magnificent football club and a magnificent city, whilst being honest about the struggles of the 1960s and 1970s in one of our industrial heartlands. We hope to honour the fans, the city, and the legacy of Liverpool FC in bringing its story to life."
We don't know who'll be in the show just yet, or when exactly it's set to air, but we do know that the series will be shot in and around LFC's hallowed stadium, Anfield, and around Liverpool itself. And for those who happen to support — or even just admire — the greatest team in the sporting world, we'll be certain to Kop a load of this A24 and Liverpool FC co-production whenever it does eventually hit our screens. But until that day arrives, fret not, and remember... You'll Never Walk Alone.
