The excitement of the original Matrix and its innovative bullet-time had worn thin, while Paul Greengrasss Bourne trilogy was seeing its impact diluted by a slew of imitators where each seemed less inspired than the last. Coupled with the growing popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a once-classic genre now defined by reheated leftovers felt like yesterdays news.
