Jake Gyllenhaal And Kevin Costner Set For Long-Gestating Dramedy Honeymoon With Harry

It's a well-known Hollywood truth that unless you're Hallmark, Steven Soderbergh, or Osgood Perkins, making movies takes a long damn time. But even by Tinseltown's slow standards, Honeymoon With Harry has been a long time coming. First snapped up by New Line in 2004 as a potential Vince Vaughn and Jack Nicholson starrer, then floated for Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro at Warner Bros. in 2015, the book-based father-and-son-in-law dramedy had seemed at one point destined for the great script scrapheap in the sky. But now THR is reporting that Jake Gyllenhaal and Kevin Costner are getting ready to step up to the plate as Amazon MGM Studios has just snagged the rights to the movie.

Per THR, Crazy, Stupid, Love trio Dan Fogelman, Glenn Ficarra, and John Requa have come aboard to bring Honeymoon With Harry to our screens at long last, with Fogelman — currently hard at work on Paradise Season 2 — attached to write and Ficarra and Requa taking on co-directing duties. Based on Bart Baker's eponymous novel, the movie will see Gyllenhaal star as a man who finds himself going on honeymoon with his would've been father-in-law after his fiancée tragically dies just days before their wedding.

Fogelman has actually been on board to write since the days Bradley Cooper was readying himself to make Honeymoon With Harry his directorial debut, so we'd imagine the specific character dynamics of the story — with Gyllenhaal's quasi-widower looking to drink himself into oblivion before running into Costner's bereft father — will remain as they ever were, teeing up another bittersweet weepie from the man behind This Is Us. The promise of a Fogelman hit in the feels, coupled with the tantalising prospect of seeing Gyllenhaal and Costner sharing the screen and a movie so many years in the making finally being realised, has us already set to pack our bags and head off on our long overdue Honeymoon With Harry... just as soon as we find out when the flight takes off.
