Gavin & Stacey Duo James Corden And Ruth Jones To Reteam On Apple TV+ Series The Choir

We're not gonna lie to you, it's been hard since Gavin & Stacey's final episode came out last Christmas, it has. And we've gotta be honest, we've been absolutely dying to hear what's next for the show's creators, James Corden and Ruth Jones, ever since. Handily then, it looks like somebody at Deadline's been making some calls to find out what's occurin' with the telly-making duo, as the trade has exclusively confirmed that Corden and Jones are heading to Apple TV+ with The Choir, a new eight-part comedy drama on which they'll serve as writer-stars.

Neither sequel nor spin-off from Gavin & Stacey, contrary to tabloid clickbait in recent weeks, The Choir instead looks to be an all-new small-town character piece from Corden and Jones (and not, crucially, an English-language remake of 2004 French borstal joint Les Choristes, either.) Per the description of the series given to Deadline, the show will see the pair "star as brother and sister Ben and Lisa, who haven’t seen each other for several years." Continuing, the synopsis reads, "Ben has been living abroad, while Lisa has carried on in their small English town where nothing ever happens. But when events take a sorry turn, Ben is forced to return to a life he never wanted, a town he never liked, and a family from which he’s estranged." On the basis of that alone, this sounds a little more weighted to the drama side of the series' comedy-drama billing, but if Gavin & Stacey taught us anything, it's that the messiest and most complicated matters of the heart is often where the creators found their funniest material.

With filming due to begin on The Choir next year, our expectation is that we may see the series potentially by the end of 2026, but if not then almost certainly in 2027. In the meantime however, Corden and Jones are plenty busy, with the former currently starring in a Broadway revival of satirical play Art with Bobby Cannavale and Neil Patrick Harris, and Jones readying a close-up in Netflix series Run Away, the streamer's latest Harlan Coben adaptation. So there we have it, no Smithy & Nessa: A Gavin & Stacey Story or The Fishing Trip Uncovered awaits, but instead something entirely fresh and original from the creators of one of Britain's best loved sit-coms. Crackin'!
