Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Series Heading For Amazon From Lucifer And For All Mankind Producers

Tigers get crouching, dragons get hiding, and fans of martial arts epics get hyped — a new Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon series is a-comin'! Yes, 25 years after Ang Lee introduced audiences in the English-speaking world to the wonders of wuxia with his gravity defying, four-time Oscar winning take on Wang Dulu's Crane-Iron books, Deadline are today reporting that Amazon are getting ready to bring the eastern action saga to the small screen. And what's more, Lucifer and The Brothers Sun producer Jason Ning is teaming up with legendary TV creator Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind, Battlestar Galactica) to make it happen.

As Deadline's reporting notes, a new adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon — which tells the sort of Sense & Sensibility (& Swords) tale of star-crossed warriors Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai (Michelle Yeoh and Chow-Yun Fat in Lee's telling) — has been in the offing for a couple of years now. Initially, Ning was set as writer, and then just last year Moore, who's already got another mythic epic on its way to Prime Video in the shape of God Of War, came aboard the project too. Whether the duo's designs for this new TV adaptation of Crouching Tiger will extend beyond the story Lee told and cover author Wang Dulu's whole, four-generation spanning original pentalogy however very much remains to be seen.

As you'd expect at this early stage in the series' development, we don't yet know who'll be stepping into Shu Lien's embroidered robes and Li Mu Bai's tunic and slacks to zip about on wires and clash swords against luscious elemental backdrops. Nor do we know when we might expect this latest take on Wang Dulu's books to arrive on our screens. Still, with stock in Asian influenced action filmmaking — on the big and small screen — ever rising and this year marking a quarter of a century since Ang Lee's game changing take on the material, we are ready to give ourselves up and find ourselves all over again when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon lands — or sort-of hovers above — Prime Video sometime in the near future.
