Few is the number of singers who've successfully made the leap from the studio to the screen. Frank Sinatra, Cher, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Elvis, Madonna, *ahem* Justin Timberlake perhaps. But having conquered the music world and given everyone a Brat summer in 2024, pop star Charli XCX is changing lanes in a big way this year. After booking a whole bunch of buzzy film projects in recent months (more on those below), Variety is reporting that the 'Sympathy is a knife' singer is gearing up to produce and star in The Moment, an A24 movie based on her own original idea.
Set to be the first project released under Charli XCX's Studio365 production banner, The Moment — whose plot details are being kept schtum for now (meaning yes, you'll just have to Guess what's going on for now) — will mark the feature directorial debut of photographer turned filmmaker Aidan Zamiri. Elsewhere, Zamiri is also set to serve as co-writer on the film alongside Bertie Brandes (who, notably, received a 'Special Thanks' on the '360' music video), while Charli's longtime collaborator A.G. Cook is also on board to compose original music for the project.
Now, admittedly, so far that's not a hell of a lot to work with. But looking at Charli XCX's current acting pipeline, which includes the likes of Cathy Yan's The Gallerist, Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex, Romain Gavrais' Sacrifice, and Daniel Goldhaber’s Faces Of Death — films in which she'll share the screen with Olivia Wilde, Mason Gooding, Cooper Hoffman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans, Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine Zeta-Jones to name but a few — it's very clear that more Angry Birds movies are probably not on Charli's mind going forwards. As for The Moment then, for the, er, moment we'll have to just wait and see what Charli XCX has in store. We'll catch you brats at the cinema!
