Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot With Sarah Michelle Gellar In The Works — Chloé Zhao To Direct

*WARNING: This article contains Buffy The Vampire Slayer spoilers*

As the saying goes, "Once a slayer, always a slayer!" And that certainly looks to be the case for Sarah Michelle Gellar, who hung up her stake as eponymous bloodsucker hunter Buffy Summers when Joss Whedon's supernatural coming-of-age series Buffy The Vampire Slayer ended its seven season run back in 2003. Yes, 22 years after surviving the collapse of the Hellmouth, SMG's iconic heroine is coming back back back for a reboot/follow-up series. And what's more, there's quite the team coming together to mastermind the chosen one's return.

Per Deadline's reporting, Oscar winning Nomadland director Chloé Zhao — a self-confessed longtime Buffyverse stan — is being lined up to direct the sequel series' pilot, which hails from Poker Face showrunning duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The understanding at this stage is that the Zuckermans' Buffy project is close to confirming a pilot order from Hulu, with sources stating that a writers' room for a full series is already being assembled. Further details about what exactly a Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival could look like — or where the story would pick up — are being kept understandably under wraps for now, but early signs do suggest more OG cast members are likely to return for the reboot. And based on Gellar's recent Instagram posting (see below), it's clear that enthusiasm and excitement for a return to Sunnydale — or at least the hole where Sunnydale used to be — is high:

Gellar initially seeded the idea of getting a Buffy revival going while promoting Dexter: Original Sin last year, her previous disinterest in a reboot having been undone by seeing how franchises like Dexter and Sex & The City had been returned to in ways that pushed the overall stories and their characters forwards. "Watching Sex & City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe,’ said Gellar at the time. And now here we are, and suddenly the hardest thing in the world isn't to live in it... it's to wait for more Buffy reboot news. But for now, Scoobies, we are so back!
