Ever since actor-comedian Zach Cregger became the next big thing in genre filmmaking seemingly overnight with the release of noodle-twisting horror Barbarian back in 2022, all eyes have been on the buzzy director's next moves. And with his follow-up to that Airbnb chiller, Julia Garner and Josh Brolin led "multi-story horror epic" Weapons, having already wrapped filming, Cregger has just added quite the project to his pipeline. Per THR's reporting, Cregger has been tapped to write and direct a new movie based on Resident Evil, Capcom's fan favourite zombie horror game franchise.
According to THR, Cregger's movie — which would also serve as a reboot of the pre-existing seven film, $1.2 billion grossing, (mostly) Milla Jovovich led Resident Evil cinematic universe — has been the talk of Hollywood, with studios including Warner Bros. and Netflix vying to land the potentially huge money spinner. And while we don't know just yet what shape Cregger's movie will take or who will join the fight for/against the Umbrella Corporation and its bio-organic abominations, we do know that the filmmaker won't be heading to Raccoon City alone. Screenwriter Shay Hatten, who has a solid background in both horror (Day Shift, Zack Snyder's Army Of The Dead) and action (John Wick: Chapter 4), will co-write the latest Resident Evil adaptation with Cregger, while long-time screen rights holders Constantin Film will produce the feature alongside PlayStation Productions.
Described by sources as a take on Resi that will "take the title to its horror roots", Cregger's film — which, lest we forget, is coming from a director who has already shown they know a thing or two about subverting expectations and handling monsters with as much skill as human characters — certainly sounds like it's shaping up to have it where it counts. But having been burned several times before by past Resident Evil outings on screens both big and small, we'll wait until we hear a little more about Cregger's undead offering before we let ourselves get carried away. For now though, colour us very intrigued...
